Animals are the major attraction which visitors experience while in Mikumi national park. This park is home to abundant wildlife which makes people nicknamed it “the little Serengeti.” Here, you will encounter majestic elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, leopards, lions, sable antelopes, and many more. Tree climbing lions, a rare sight, are more commonly spotted in Mikumi than in the famous Lake Manyara National Park. The park’s central region, particularly the Mkata plains, boasts a wealth of wildlife, while the southwestern part is ideal for birding. The animals can be observed throughout the year, with water catchment areas offering the best sightings during the dry season. In the southeastern part of the park near the Vuma hills, you can easily spot shy kudus and sable antelopes among the dotted Miombo woodlands. Mikumi National Park is one of the few places in Tanzania and East Africa where you have a chance to see the rare African wild dogs.
